Colorado – Pure & Simple.  It’s the calling card of the Gunnison Valley.

Gunnison has long been a base camp for adventure.  Mountain biking, climbing, river sports and ski adventures launch from our friendly town every day.  We’ve hosted Ride the Rockies and the Bicycle Tour of Colorado numerous times.  It’s a community of active, aware, supportive outdoors people who embrace cycling.

Throughout the year, visitors enjoy a real western town:  distinctive restaurants, unique shops, cultural opportunities and varied lodging choices.  The Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport, Western State College, Gunnison Whitewater Park , Gunnison Valley Observatory and Pioneer Museum all make their home in town and elevate the visitor experience.  Nearby attractions include the Curecanti National Recreation Area, Blue Mesa Reservoir (Colorado’s largest body of water), The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, historic towns and two Scenic & Historic Byways.

"The City of Gunnison is proud to be chosen to host a Stage start of the USAPCC. We are excited to have world class stage racing return to the Gunnison Valley after such a thrilling experience last year. Gunnison, with its unique blend of diverse outdoor recreational opportunities, long standing ranching heritage and exceptional educational opportunities at Western State College embodies the spirit of Western Colorado. Once again that friendly western spirit will welcome the world to our amazingly beautiful high mountain valley. Gunnison has been a believer in the USAPCC since its inception and looks forward to the opportunity to continue the huge momentum of the USAPCC as the premier stage race in North America."

Cattlemens Days

Date: July 6th to the 12th, 2012

Time: All day

Location: Fred R. Field Western Heritage Center

Short description: In 1901 this celebration came under the sponsorship of the Gunnison Valley Stockgrowers Association and the rodeo officially adopted the name "Cattlemen's Days". The event began operating under the direction of the specially created Cattlemen's Days Association several decades later. Scheduled between spring calving and summer haying, Cattlemen's Days continues to demonstrate the rhythm of traditional ranch lifestyles. But the event has matured leaps and bounds from the days when Gunnison County ranch hands tried their luck with local ornery livestock. Its popularity now attracts PRCA cowboys and cowgirls from around the United States and Canada. These are professionals that promise top notch performances to please the large crowds that come to watch.

Ride the 2011 USA Pro Cycling Challenge Queen Stage Route

At 131 miles and with two 12,000-foot mountain passes, riding the 2011 UPCC Queen Stage is becoming one of the rides that amateur cyclists must accomplish in their lifetimes. This route plies three of Colorado's fabled river valleys, the Gunnison, the Arkansas, and the Roaring Fork. It will climb to over 12,000 feet of elevation as it crosses the Continental Divide....twice! As if the stage is not a formidable enough, the first of these ascents, Cottonwood Pass, is on a dirt road. Ironically, at the summit, this unique surface abruptly becomes a twisting ribbon of asphalt  which plummets nearly a vertical mile to the river town of Buena Vista where it turns north and only slightly uphill toward Leadville. But soon after a hard left a 12,095 ft summit looms in the western distance. Over the top of Independence Pass a hair-raising descent to the finish in downtown Aspen remains.

Blue Mesa Reservoir

At 20 miles long and with almost 100 miles of shoreline, Blue Mesa Reservoir is the largest body of water in the state of Colorado. Set within an incredible backdrop of the Rockies, it houses the largest Kokanee Salmon fishery in the U.S. and some of the best fishing in the western U.S. Sailing, kayaking, boating, waterskiing and just hanging out on the beach will keep you busy all summer long.

Hartman Rocks Recreation Area

Managed by the BLM, the Hartman Rocks Recreation Area has a trail network comprised of both single track and double track trails and is easily accessible from Gunnison. More than 20 trails on 8,000 acres of public land and even more ways to combine them make your options endless. As you can imagine the trail system requires days of exploration, so plan to spend some time checking out all there is to see and do. Other activities include hiking, rock climbing, horse back riding, as well as winter activities like skiing and snowshoeing.

Cattlemen's Days

Cattlemen's Days, the oldest Rodeo in Colorado.  The Tomichi valley houses the event for 2 weeks every July.  Carnival, Roping, Bronco Busting, Horse Shows and Races, Country Music...

It was built for recreational canoeing, kayaking, fishing and rafting.  The community park associated with the water park includes a walking path, picnic area with grills. The trail runs the whole length of the park and makes fishing the river easy.
