Authentic, open and free of crowds, Crested Butte is a quaint 1880s mining town and a Registered National Historic District. It’s also the “official wildflower capital” of Colorado. And in 2008, the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) named Crested Butte one of its “Dozen Distinctive Destinations.”
“Mt. Crested Butte is a delightful hidden gem that offers a rare mix of beauty, history and adventure,” says Richard Moe, president of the NTHP. “Filled with endless recreational opportunities no matter the time of year, this authentic mountain town is arguably one of the most charming vacation destinations in the Rockies.” The town also embraces the arts in many ways year-round. In the center of this celebration are the Crested Butte Center for the Arts and the Crested Butte Mountain Theatre.
Winding three miles up Gothic Road north of Crested Butte is the Town of Mt. Crested Butte. Established in 1974 and at an elevation of 9,380 feet, it is the mountain town village of the north end of the East River Valley.

Often referred to as "Colorado's last great ski town", Crested Butte’s downtown area is a unique example of a quaint 1880's historic mining town and a registered National Historic District. Year round, you will find interesting shops, great restaurants, and all types of lodging options. Crested Butte’s National Historic District can be found along Elk Avenue in the heart of Crested Butte. Walk through an exciting part of America's past while enjoying the architectural character of Crested Butte. Born out of the gold and silver booms of the last 1800's, Crested Butte was and is a workingman's town. In 1974, the town was designated a National Historic District, one of Colorado's largest. The wooden benches lining Elk Avenue are the perfect place to take break and enjoy the sunshine and colorful flowers brightening up the sidewalks.
With more than 1.7 million acres, over 20 - 13,000-foot-plus mountains (including two 14ers) and a hefty bounty of recreational opportunities, the Gunnison National Forest is Crested Butte’s outdoor playground. The National Forest provides an abundance of recreational opportunities, everything from hiking to biking to ATVing to boating and more. Scenic drives up Kebler and Cottonwood Pass and along the Alpine Loop Byway are a popular way to tour parts of Gunnison National Forest. Another popular scenic drive leaves Crested Butte via Slate River road and travels to Paradise Divide, Schofield Pass, Emerald Lake and past the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory before ending in Mt. Crested Butte. The drive can be done in reverse, 4wd is recommended (RVs are not). Visit the Gunnison National Forest and see for yourself why Crested Butte was deemed the “Wildflower Capital of Colorado” by the State Legislature in 1990.

The Museum is home to a number of exhibits with something to interest almost anyone. When you step into the front doors of the building you step into the past. The front of the building, which served as a hardware store from 1883-1996, features the famous coal stove and all the original cases filled with a sampling of the merchandise sold in the building historically. The front section of the building also houses a gallery of black and white portraits taken by Sandra Cortner of townsfolk who stayed to see Crested Butte through the thin times of the 1950-60s after the mine closed. The rear of the building originally was a working garage built in the 1930s. Exhibits there include a functioning model railroad, a life sized mining diorama, one of Crested Buttes original gondolas, and sections on domestic life in Crested Butte, local geology, the history of skiing and the ski area, and a children’s exhibit. The Museum also houses the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame.
